Fiction
Starry Starry Night by Shani Mootoo
In Shani Mootoo’s Starry Starry Night, six-year-old Anjula Ghoshal lives with Ma and Pa in their house on Selvon Street in Trinidad. She is happy. She does not understand why she must go live with strangers she must call Mummy and Daddy, with Tara and Anil, whom she is told are her brother and sister. Stan on Guard: A Two-Part Invention by K. R. Wilson
An “invention,” as it appears in the title of K. R. Wilson’s new novel Stan on Guard: A Two-Part Invention (Guernica Editions, 2026), can pertain to a piece of music usually made up of two-part counterpoint, as well as to a work of the imagination. Both definitions apply to Wilson’s highly compelling book.
Trace Evidence by Stephen Randle
Trace Evidence is being promoted by ReBound Press as a “gritty YA urban fantasy novel” which is set in a not-too-distant future following a climate apocalypse. This story, however, provided an engaging experience for this “senior” reader for several hours.

Non-Fiction
The Golden Generation by Oren Weisfeld
An increasing number of Canadian basketball players have made their mark in the NBA and the NCAA in recent years. Some sports announcers and writers attribute this to the presence of the Toronto Raptors, who have given basketball a higher profile across the country, inspiring future stars.

Doubles by Nora Gold (Guernica, May 1, 2026. This book is available for pre-order.)
Acclaimed author Nora Gold ventures into the perspective of a twelve-year-old girl in protective custody due to an abusive father in the late 1960s. This articulate and lively girl, adept with numbers, soon comprehends that no one will rescue her, leading to her stagnation within the uninspiring group environment. She ultimately splits her identity into two parts, symbolically doubling herself as a coping strategy. The former, cheerful girl remains (in the past), while the new aspect retreats inward.
Ms. Gold's portrayal of her protagonist's mental and psychological transformation is both strikingly realistic and unsettling. (Contributed by James M Fisher)
